JP RAUTIO

JP Rautio (b. 1982) creates charcoal paintings on wood panels. The images recall scientific photography: microscopic, rapatronic and astronomical. He often uses polygonal panels, the geometry of which is an abstraction of the human hand, and the use of charcoal a reference to cave painting. The shapes emerge as Rautio rubs charcoal into the wood surface. They are theoretical objects that exist on a number of levels - as 'figures', 'energies' and depictions of the moment of their own creation.
